The Burger Bus
It’s Friday lunchtime in the parking lot of the Wheelhouse bicycle shop in downtown Santa Barbara.  From a gleaming yellow bus, with The Burger Bus emblazoned across the top, the delicious smell of freshly cooked burgers wafts through the air.  Even better, the menu written up on the side of bus indicates that these are no ordinary burgers. Here the creativity of chef Michael Gardner, who owns the business with his wife Cheryl, comes to the fore. The Burger Bus menu includes such offerings as The Burger Bus Cheeseburger and jelly (spicy or not), Pesto Burger containing pesto jack cheese, and Falafel sandwich, served on locally baked ciabatta rolls and accompanied by a range of sides, to include yam fries or fried pickle chips.  Most importantly, all food (hormone free beef, cheeses and bread) is fresh daily and provided by reputable local suppliers.

Michael and Cheryl wanted to start a restaurant in Santa Barbara, but given the costs, they decided that “mobile” was the way to go. Michael had been a chef since high school and had always wanted his own restaurant business and Cheryl had taught science in elementary school. When they began exploring their “mobile” options, they discovered that old school buses were available for purchase.  They located one in Riverside CA in late 2008, which was suitable for conversion to a mobile burger bar.  They went through a rigorous process to ensure that the conversion met all the relevant health codes, and their contractor completed the work in May 2009.  In the meantime Cheryl had contacted SCORE to see how it might be able to assist in the setting up of their business.

“We met with SCORE counselor Roy Norman.  He advised us to create a business plan.  Setting up a business has so many facets that our discussions enabled us to think more clearly, prioritize and get our ducks in a row. This really helped us to move on at a crucial stage and focus on the most important steps we needed to take and when.”
As soon as it was ready, in May 2009, The Burger Bus went into action. The bus is parked at different locations within Santa Barbara four days a week from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is available for events and private parties on Saturdays. Because of local ordinances, the bus has to be parked on private areas, e.g. private parking lots and they are located in different areas every day. Initially owners of the lots were a little wary of The Burger Bus but now they have lots of offers and have changed to more popular locations several times in the five months they have been trading. The Burger Bus also has an internet presence – a website full of information, a YouTube video, a page on Facebook, and daily entries on Twitter.

And business? The Burger Bus is doing well.  Local newspapers took an early interest in this venture and this gave rise to some early welcome publicity.  And so far, the couple has had no need to do any further advertising.  They are meeting their business targets and already, within five months, are developing ideas about their future. In a year they would like to acquire a second bus so that they can duplicate their current operation in Goleta.  Franchising might also be on the horizon - the couple has already been approached by people located in other parts of the United States who would be interested in setting up something similar.

For now, Cheryl and Michael are very enthusiastic about having their own business and working together and dealing with the unexpected day to day challenges that arise in any business. They continue to develop the menu from their own ideas and based on what they like, and use different recipes, seasonal jellies and different cheeses for variety. They are already getting to know their customers by name and are rapidly becoming a real Santa Barbara institution!
